China's Deep-sea Mining Vehicle Completes 1300-seabed trial

SHANGHAI, Aug 11 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese deep-sea mining vehicle "Pioneer I" successfully completed a 1,300-meter deep sea trial recently in the Xisha area of the South China Sea.
 
The vehicle was developed by the ocean engineering team of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and can operate autonomously at the bottom of the sea.
 
The trial was carried out on seabeds at 108 meters, 968 meters and 1,305 meters below the ocean's surface, marking an important step in the research and development of deep-sea mining vehicles.
