The world's largest coal-fired power plant began full operations in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Saturday, according to media reports.

The plant developed by a State-owned electricity firm will have a gross installed capacity of 6.72 megawatts, chinanews.com reported on Sunday.

The project aims to reduce pollution, and the total diffused carbon dioxide was reduced by 2,143 tons from 2015 to 2016, the report noted.

The plant is part of China's efforts to drive the economy in the western region. As of 2016, the plant had paid taxes of 14.9 billion yuan ($2.17 billion).
